11 Ways to Get in the Holiday Spirit

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas – even if this year, everything feels a little different. While some of our favorite holiday happenings aren’t taking place in order to keep everyone safe, we’ve been on the hunt for ways to usher in some holiday cheer in High Point. Check out our list of 11 ideas to get in the spirit (and share with us on social media if there are other ideas you have for making the days merry and bright)!

1. Deck the halls with something from Soviero’s.

Soviero’s Tri-County Garden Center has everything you need to get your house feeling (and smelling!) like Christmas this holiday. With Christmas trees and handmade wreaths, Soviero’s will get your home ready for the season.

2. Enjoy Christmas Tea at the Market

The Market in High Point is hosting their Christmas Tea on December 5, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Drop by this event and enjoy live music, giveaways, and cider, tea, and cookies. The event will be sponsoring Feeding Lisa’s Kids, so you can bring donations or enter a raffle to win one of The Market’s famous cakes!

3. Grab a photo on the “Selfie Sleigh.”

While the Annual Holiday Parade won’t be taking place this year, the Guilford Merchants Association installed a display by the Christmas tree at the High Point Public Library for community members to take family photos on the holiday sleigh. Put on your most festive Christmas sweater, and head down to the library to “sleigh” your selfie! (Members of the GMA will be responsible for keeping the sleigh thoroughly wiped down and clean.)

4. Attend the “Cool Yule” at HPxD

HPxD, a collective of furniture and design brands right here in High Point, is hosting their first ever open to the public event: the Cool YuleShop furniture, home décor, fine art, and more, all while soaking in the season. Brands like Red Egg, Verellen, and South + English will all be present showing off their products and holiday cheer. The event will be taking place from December 1-5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., so don’t miss this chance to shop local this holiday!

5. Mail a letter to Santa.

Have you spotted Santa’s “mailbox” here in High Point? Right in front of Price & Associates Realtors on N. Main St., you can drop off a letter headed for the North Pole. Help your little ones write out their Christmas list, and make a trip to see the letter safely off to old St. Nick.

6. See the lights at WinterFest.

Want to see holiday lights from the safety of your own car? Head over to the High Point Athletic Complex on December 5, between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. With lights, decorations, and holiday music that you can enjoy as you drive through, WinterFest will definitely put you in the holiday spirit. Admission is free, but a donation of non-perishable items for The Salvation Army is encouraged.

7. Frost your own pinecones.

Make your own festive winter centerpiece this holiday with something you may find in your backyard: pinecones! If you don’t have pinecones nearby, explore Piedmont Environmental Center or Rich Fork Preserve to seek out all-natural decorations. Want to give them a little more of winter’s magic? Pain

t the tips with Elmer’s glue, and then roll the pinecones in Epsom salts.

8. Visit High Point Museum’s Holiday Open House.

On December 6, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the High Point Museum will host its 48th Annual Holiday Open House. Take-home craft kits, caroling, candle-dipping, outdoor exhibits, and more will be available to help you get into the High Point holiday spirit. Registration is required to ensure social distancing, so make sure to register in advance. (You can also make an appointment to see Santa from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.)

9. Make a holiday garland.

Want to make your house a little more festive? Why not spend some time making decorations together this holiday. You can make paper garlands with kids of any age, and find creative places to hang them. Another idea is to pick up some fresh citrus fruits from The Budding Artichoke and turn them into a garland. Slice your citrus fruit into ¼” slices and lay them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake slices at 175 degrees for 4-5 hours or until crisp. Once dried, you can use a sewing needle and wax thread to thread dried citrus together to make a beautiful, organic decoration for your home.

10. Have a hot chocolate bar at home.

What gets you in the winter spirit more than a satisfying cup of hot cocoa? Pick up some special treats – like marshmallows, peppermint sticks, cinnamon, whipped cream, cherries, and chocolate syrup – and create a hot chocolate bar for your family.

11. Make Christmas cards to send to loved ones or those in need of a little holiday cheer.

Why not take the extra time you have this holiday to bring some holiday cheer to those who need it most? Gather your craft supplies and make some cards. Send them to family members who are far away this holiday season, or take them to a local nursing home to send some Christmas love from afar.
