A View On: Shane Key Music
Sometimes, there is nothing more inspiring than hearing of careers that are the result of pure passion. Shane Key Music is a prime example. From studying music in college, to opening a studio to offer private lessons, to performing solo at various events – it is clear that Shane has dedicated his life to being a talented musician, and it shows. Shane is able to perform numerous types of music, so that he give any audience exactly what they want. Read below to learn how this High Point local has been able to grow his business over the years through his impressive performances and support of the High Point community.
Q. Tell us about you as a live musician in about 10 words.
A. Professional, authentic, skilled, lively, engaging, fun, band-in-one-man
Q. Why was it started and what was the vision?
A. I have always loved singing and playing instruments. At age 10 I was playing drums in my church’s band. After graduating with music and business degrees from Pfeiffer University, I opened a studio behind my home teaching private music lessons. Out of a desire to perform more often, around 2006 I started out playing solo coffeehouse gigs every other week or so. I landed a Furniture Market showroom gig in 2011. In 2014, I started playing every Friday night at Real Kitchen and Market for 2 years. I still play there often. From that gig, word spread and my calendar started filling up with more dates and private events.
Q. What is one thing people would be interested to learn about your music?
A. I use a loop pedal which allows me to record guitar, percussion and vocals on the spot and then play along, creating the sound of a full band.
Q. What are the highlights and challenges of working in High Point?
A. I have been blessed and honored to share a part of so many people’s lives playing for birthdays, weddings and other events in a close-knit community. It was challenging… and still is, honestly. to get started and to have the confidence to put myself out there and face rejection, since I’m basically selling ME.
Q. Why did you choose to locate in High Point?
A. It’s where my family and I live. Bloom where you’re planted, right?
Q. How has High Point changed since you started performing?
A. I love seeing this city grow. Businesses are opening, thriving and drawing more people. High Point University has continued to expand, promoting excellence in all it does. It’s exciting to be a part of it!
Q. What has been your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?
A. Creating a career on my own has taken time and tenacity. Navigating the intricacies of business is a constant learning process. I’ve been a musician as long as I can remember; figuring out how to make a living playing music is the trick!
Q. How have the citizens and community of High Point supported you?
A. Oh, the people of High Point have been so good to me, hiring me to play at all kinds of events.
Q. If you had one piece of advice for someone just starting out in High Point, what would it be?
A. Be courageous- if you believe you have something to offer, put it out there!

Q. What are you excited about for High Point’s future?
A. My generation is finding its voice. We can make our hometown as great as our vision- and we have some great visionaries here in High Point.
