HPU Family Guide: Food Edition

As the sunny summer days come to end, the reality of moving into college strikes. This right of passage into adulthood is an exciting time in the life of any family and the families coming to High Point University are no exception (cue the tears). No matter if it is your kid that is going off to college or if you’re the one moving into school, move-in weekend is filled with feelings of excitement and anxiousness as you prepare to settle into a new area.

In short, this time of year can be pretty stressful (and emotional if you are the parents)! So to help soften the blow, we have prepared a list of great spots in High Point for you and your family to celebrate one last time before you have to say goodbye (tissues not included so bring your own).

1.    Blue Water Grille

If you are looking to have a nice intimate family dinner to celebrate this new adventure, Blue Water Grille is the perfect spot.  Owner/chef Paul Riggan has curated a menu influenced from French, Asian, Caribbean and low country cuisines.  We recommend you make reservations, because there is always a long wait. So call 336-886-1010 to make reservations today!

Local tip: the restaurant is behind a shopping center, so it can typically be difficult to spot the first time!

2.    Lulu and Blu

Lulu and Blu is the perfect place to enjoy some delicious Italian food with your family! It is located right off Main Street, and is a quick drive from campus. They offer a large variety of Italian foods so the whole family can find a meal they will enjoy.

Local tip:  Lulu and Blu is closed on Sundays, so plan on dining there earlier in your visit!

4.    Penny Path

Penny Path offers the best coffee and crepes you can imagine.  This quaint downtown cafe is a compact coffeehouse, which often times is very packed! However, their variety of tasty savory and sweet options for crepes will have you wanting to come back. What’s better than a great coffee, a delicious crepe, and a friendly staff?

Local tip: Penny Path is closed Wednesday – Friday.

5.    Brown Tuck Brewery

Does Dad need a beer after a long day unpacking? The owners of Brown Truck Brewery have created the perfect place to relax outside in the nice Carolina weather and enjoy a local craft beer. Whether you want to enjoy a drink with your kid when visiting them at school or maybe use it as an escape after a long day of decorating the perfect dorm room, Brown Truck Brewery will not disappoint.

Local Tip: Brown Truck sells growlers of their beer so you can take it home to enjoy between visits to the HPU campus! And yes, this is a brewery, not a restaurant BUT it made our list because they have food trucks often so check out their Instagram page for what trucks to expect!

6.    Blue Rock Pizza

Are you looking for a casual place that offers wood fired pizza? If so, you should try Blue Rock Pizza. Their large selection of specialty pizzas are unbelievably tasty. Blue Rock Pizza also features a selection of forty craft beers on tap.

7.    The Cozy Cannoli

The Cozy Cannoli is a great spot to satisfy any sweet tooth. This delicious bakery is owned by Lucy and Lexy D’Egidio, a mother-daughter duo, who have combined their passion for baking. The Cozy Cannoli features a changing variety of fresh baked good every day. One thing that will never change is their delicious cannoli, which gave them their name.

8.    OrganicAF

If you are looking for a heathy snack or light lunch to enjoy, then you should check out OrganicAF.  The owners Matthew Williams, Priscilla Williams and Mike Fulk have mastered the art behind juicing. OrganicAF is the first all natural, cold-pressed organic juice bar in High Point, which has become very popular over the past year. Their juices are the perfect thing to help refuel you after a long day.

9.    Fixins’ Eatery

Just a few blocks from campus is one of the newest additions to High Point’s food scene: Fixins’ American Craft Eatery. Here you can enjoy a fusion of Grandma’s American cooking with National and Global influences – sounds perfect for the blend of families from all over the world that attend HPU, right? This fusion of flavors might sound complex but that complexity of preparation translates simply into a melting pot of flavors.  And trust us, It. Is. Flavorful.

Local Tip: They change their menu often so check out their Facebook page in advance if you are looking for something in particular.
