The kids are out of school, the weather is hot, and you can only spend so many days by the pool before you’re ready for a change. Have no fear! High Point Discovered has you covered on a fun day out activity for the whole family. Pack up the kids and spend the day exploring the parts of your hometown you may not even know exist through a scavenger hunt – High Point style!
We’ve listed some hidden (and not-so hidden) places in High Point for you to find this summer, but we’re not telling you the location. That means it’s up to you to find these spots. If you can find every spot on this list, snap a picture, and tag us in them, you could win a night out at a High Point Rockers game!
1. Set Sail
This “ship” may just be the biggest one you’ll see in High Point. Nope, you’re not going to find it at the Oak Hollow Marina, so you might have to look around downtown for this gigantic building-sized boat.
2. Court is in Session
Did you know that, unlike every other NC county, there are two courthouses in Guilford County? That’s right! And High Point hosts the second one. Can you find the steps to justice and snap a picture while you’re at it? Hint: There are actually two buildings in downtown High Point that qualify. There’s an “old” one and one that’s currently being used. Find one or the other, or both!
3. A Lot of Heart
Somewhere on Main Street you’ll find a big heart embedded in the sidewalk. The inscription reads, “The Heart of Furnitureland U.S.A.” which references High Point’s dominance as the home furnishings capital of the world.
4. A “Green” Gateway
This trail hosts some of the best bike and walking paths in High Point, so after you find it, you may want to enjoy a nice stroll. Hint: there are five entrances to this beautiful pathway, and we’ll give you credit for any one that you find.
5. Ancient History
Our downtown is jam packed with High Point’s history – from the furniture industry to the John Coltrane statue. But can you find what is reported to be the oldest surviving building in the downtown area? You’ll need to walk along a “High” avenue near a street named for a tree.
6. A Quick Call
You’ve seen him on our social media – the famous Tree Frog painted by BrianStudio, but can you find another mural by the High Point artist? This one has an ever-rotating message posted above her…
7. The Ruler of the Seas
Presiding over High Point stands a statue of Neptune himself, complete with a triton. You may have seen him driving through downtown, but do you know what building he stands guard outside of?
8. Laundry Day
As a nod to our furniture history, this iconic landmark stands to showcase High Point’s identity. If you snap a silly picture in front of this classic High Point site, you might look like you’re visiting a giant who forgot to fold his laundry!
9. Lasso the Horse
Have you snapped a picture with Hype the Rockin’ Horse yet? Although you may know where to find him, you never know when you’ll find him! Grab a selfie with Hype and share with us how big of a Rocker’s fan you are! Optional: Since it seems we have a horse-happy downtown, and in case Hype is out of town with his baseball team, find a prancing horse statue made of wire. He stands in front of the only library in the world dedicated to home furnishings and décor.
10. Hot Dog!
For 77 years, this downtown landmark has been serving burgers and dogs to hungry High Pointers. Astoundingly, the eatery has been in the same place for all those years. Hint: Its name sounds like you’re in trouble and having to hang out in your hound’s home.
If you can find all 10 locations and snap pictures, we applaud you! It might be a multi-day scavenger hunt, but we think as you travel around the city, you might find other sites you’ve been missing out on too. After all, it all depends on what you’re looking for…
