Voices Discovered: Lisa Sherry

In the spirit of Community over Competition we bring your our latest Voices Discovered – one of our dear designer friends, Lisa Sherry! As designers, we are constantly inspired by the work of our peers and Lisa is no exception.  So, needless to say, we were pretty excited to reach out to this designer extraordinaire to join the growing community of High Point Discovered.  Follow along as Lisa shares her design philosophy and so much more.

“I am the founder of Lisa Sherry Interieurs, a full-service interior design company. Together with a small  – and very able creative and production team – we serve clients all over the country. While there is a distinctive LSI oeuvre – or body of work – spaces I design really belong to those breathe life into them every day.”

Q: How did you wind up in the design business?

A. Through a wonderful roundabout route. I studied art and design in college, and started my career in photo styling and set design. From there, the real world – and my passion – of interior and lifestyle design beckoned.

Q: What type of career would you have in an alternate universe?

A. For me, career and lifestyle are really the same. It’s a meld. What I do is how I live! So, my alternate universe might find me on the French Riviera in the 1920s with the likes Picasso, Fitzgerald and Hemingway – immersed in world of art and reinvention.

Q: What do you wish you knew when first starting that you know now?

A. To trust my instincts. It takes a bit of time and experimentation to tune into those inner voices, and realize they speak the truth.

Q: What would people be surprised to learn about you?

A. I love boutique hotels, but as a kid, family vacation accommodations were always tents. Yes, we were campers! Even though we were roughing it, my mom always found ways to make the experience fun and a little exotic. She’s the original glamper!

Q: Best career advice you have ever received?

A. Always tell the truth.

Q: What motivates you?

A. Honestly, I am pretty easily motivated, but one thing that seems to firm my resolve and spur me (and my team) to new heights is being told (fill in the blank) is impossible. “You can’t” has the opposite effect on me … “Oh yes I can!”

Q: Favorite book (business or pleasure)?

A. Presently, I’m reading the amazing Joan Didion. “South and West,” to be specific.

Q: Best vacation you have taken?

A. I believe the best is really yet to come, as the saying goes. However, my husband and I traveled to Thailand and Vietnam last year. Travel, like great design, is transformative. It opens your eyes to new ways of seeing, thinking, feeling and living.

Q: Where would we find you on a Sunday afternoon?

A. I do not script my weekends so hard to say! In the garden. At the gym. On the beach. Lounging amidst the pages of the NY Times.

Q: Your go-to cocktail (or mocktail)?

A. I’m keen for shandies these days, channeling summer – heavy on the ginger ale, with a pop of a micro brew.

Q: What makes you truly happy?

A. The people I hold dearest. Always.

Q: As you know, HPU is right here with incredible students looking to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams – what three pieces of advice would you give them?

A. You are the authors of what’s next. Understand the past and present, and own the future. I’m with you!
