Don’t Toss, Donate!: Where to Donate in High Point This Fall

A image of a car packed with items from a students dorm.

As the weather cools off, we can hardly wait to start unpacking all of our favorite sweaters and jackets and scarves. Bring us all the cold weather cozy clothes. But as we begin transitioning our wardrobes this season, it’s easy to see how much we have – okay, we’ll admit it – that we don’t really use or need. But don’t be too quick to toss your clothes to the curb.

It may take a few extra steps, but did you know that donating your gently used clothes and housewares is so much better for our community and the environment? As a nation, we can generate millions of tons of waste in textiles (all kinds of clothing, bed sheets, fabrics, and more) year in and year out. But what’s a better alternative? Providing clothing and materials to our community while reducing your impact on our Earth!

What’s more, as the weather turns colder, it’s especially important to be mindful of how we can support ALL in our community. Even if you don’t have clothes you need to get rid of, there are a variety of materials you can supply to ministries and organizations who serve our city.

So take stock of what you have this fall and see what you can give. Consider making a trip to reduce waste and increase generosity!

Below we have several places that are great resources for secondhand clothing and materials donations that will accept what you no longer need.

Habitat for Humanity – 133 Montlieu Ave.

Habitat for Humanity has been helping to provide housing for hardworking families around the world since 1976. One way you can be involved is by donating to our local Habitat for Humanity ReStore. The High Point ReStore, like all Habitat for Humanity stores, is locally owned and operated, so the proceeds go to improve housing opportunities both in our city and globally. To view information on our local ReStore, visit here.

West End Ministries – 903 W English Rd.

West End Ministries in High Point works to serve underprivileged residents in our community with long-term steps for betterment through empowering life changes. They accept a variety of donations, including any gently used clothes, housewares and even furniture for the WEM Thrift Store. The store not only provides items to our community at affordable prices, but the profits go to support WEM Programs. To learn more about WEM, visit here.

The Salvation Army – 1501 S Main St

The Salvation Army has been serving communities worldwide for more than 150 years. The location in High Point serves many around us, and also operates a thrift store that will accept clothing, housewares and furniture donations. They even offer a free pick-up service for large furniture items. The proceeds from their Family Store go to support outreach programs that improve our community. To find out more about their store, visit here.

Open Door Ministries – 400 N Centennial St.

The staff at Open Door Ministries provides both short term and long-term solutions to the issues of homelessness, joblessness, and poverty in our city. They provide educational opportunities, job placement and support, and food to a variety of recipients. They serve more than 8,000 meals per month and provide non-perishable food as well. Open Door Ministries accepts all kinds of material donations, from socks, t-shirts, bedding, towels, and even toiletries and cleaning supplies. Cover the City – 405 N Main St.

Cover the City is a project near and dear to our hearts (which you can read about here). Their mission, to supply those experiencing homelessness with blankets, especially in winter months, began right here in High Point. Coming up on colder weather, why not donate your gently used blankets to provide warmth to our community this season!

HOP Shop Thrift – 1020 Eastchester Dr.

HOP Shop Thrift is a local thrift store that receives donations of all kinds to fill their store. Owned and operated by the High Point House of Prayer, their staff works to help break the bonds of addiction in the lives of community members.

Goodwill – 1145 E Lexington Ave., 2012 N Main St., and 5301 Samet Dr.

For years, local Goodwill Industries have been aiding communities in finding job placement around the nation. By donating and shopping at local Goodwill stores, we all get to extend that reach! You can find several Goodwill locations to donate to around the city, including the newest location on the corner of Eastchester and North Main Street.

So don’t let your old materials go just yet. Instead, find a place to invest and donate, and make a difference in our community!
