Who is High Point?: The Magazine Volume 3

What does it mean to be a High Pointer? What is the identity of High Point, North Carolina? These are the questions we wanted to answer in this edition of High Point Discovered: The Magazine.

We often find ourselves wondering at High Point Discovered, which comes first? The chicken or the egg? Do we tell a story and that becomes our identity? Or, do we explain our identity through the stories we tell?

HPD the Magazine Volume 3

When it comes to storytelling, it’s rarely as linear as “chicken or egg.” And discovering the identity of an entire city, even less so. In fact, sometimes it takes a whole lot of conversation, creativity, and community voices to form that community identity. And that’s exactly what our friends at the City of High Point and CivicBrand set out to do. (You can read all about that here!)

What they discovered about High Point’s identity is that we are...

A city that is the center of design.

A city of inspiring creatives.

A city that comprises a movement of makers.

A city that is kind and inclusive.

In Volume 3, we looked for stories that would help us talk about a year in the life of High Point. What we realized along the way, is that every story is rooted in those pillars of our identity.

From the farm-to-fork culinary makers, to the kind & inclusive grass-roots non-profits. From a well-designed city greenway, to the creative arts burgeoning in public high school recording studios. Our city’s identity is woven through the past, the present, and the future of High Point. It’s woven into individuals and initiatives, businesses and backyard brainstorms.

As you read through the pages of this magazine, we hope you will discover the kindness and creativity of your neighbors on every single page.

You’ll read “Home Improvement,” and discover how our city is working together to design a place that builds up our place, people, and possibilities. You’ll discover the creativity that’s happening on the stages, the art galleries, and the DIY spaces in “Creativity is Calling.” You’ll find out that anyone – yes, anyone! – can make it in High Point, thanks to our incredibly supportive entrepreneurial/maker culture. And you’ll discover how High Point is full of “Safe Spaces,” particularly as a Certified Autism Destination and home to our veterans’ community.

All this and more are in this year’s edition of High Point Discovered: The Magazine.

The question now is – how will you live into your identity as a High Pointer? How do you uniquely embody our city? Not just as a creator of awe-striking sculptures, or a curator of fine arts (although you’ll find those stories in this edition of the magazine too!). But how do you make things happen in your own networks, job, or family?

How do you make, create, include, design, engage and discover through the gifts and talents you have been given? Not just for your own benefit – but for the benefit of this city. High Point needs you to be you, so that we can be a better us. A better High Point. One that fills our world with innovative businesses, equitable service, awe-inspiring arts, and more.

A High Point that the whole world is eager to discover.
