A View On: Black Dog Lawn Care and Landscapes

Steven Beck, Owner of Black Dog Landscaping

If a dog is a man’s (and woman’s!) best friend, then Black Dog Lawn Care and Landscapes is your lawn’s new best friend! Owners Steven and Arnold Beck have a combined 40 years of experience in creating and maintaining beautiful outdoor spaces. Having grown up in High Point, they found there was no better way to make use of their talents than offering services to make their community more beautiful. They do everything from residential to commercial lawns, including full service installations of all those mulch and pine straw beds that make yards look that much more polished (and who doesn’t want that?). We had the chance to interview Steven Beck about Black Dog Lawn Care and Landscapes and learn about the attitude and vision behind this tenacious local business.

Q. Tell us about your company in about 10 words.

A. Reliable. Professional. We’re “Lawn’s Best Friend.”

Q. Why was it started and what was the vision?

A. Black Dog began with hopes of portraying virtues that I (owner, Steven Beck) gained at an early age. I learned much of my landscape knowledge from my grandfather, who completed lawn maintenance and landscape projects. Also, with a dad who was a veterinarian, I spent plenty of time around pets that seemed to want nothing more than to please you. From this, Black Dog was about getting back to my roots to give clients the best lawn care and landscape servicing, built upon years of expertise my grandfather had shown me, while offering a unique-to-the-industry style of customer service you would easily recognize in “man’s best friend.”

Q. What is one thing people would be interested to learn about Black Dog Lawn Care and Landscapes?

A. That we actually have mascots that are black dogs. Our namesake is a 9-year-old black lab named Sailor. Our team also recently added a 1-year-old black lab named Hank. They love to meet people and go on consultations and estimates.

Q. What has been your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?

A. The biggest challenge has been our rapid growth. When I decided to make this my career, I had no expectations our success would balloon as quickly as it has. Staffing, equipment, operations, and continuity have all been things we’ve had to manage because of this.

Q. How have the citizens and community of High Point supported you?

A. We’ve been fortunate to have various connections with many throughout the community, but even today are excited to be partnering with new friends!

Q. If you had one piece of advice for someone just starting out in High Point, what would it be?

A. Take advantage of a great opportunity. High Point has everything you need – you just have to take advantage of its offerings.
