Giving Tuesday: Ways to Give Back in High Point

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

Mahatma Gandhi

Giving back and supporting your community is one of the most fulfilling things anyone can do. In fact, High Point Discovered was founded to give credit to and support local businesses and citizens who go above and beyond. In the spirit of Giving Tuesday and giving back, we thought we would share some ways that you can give back to our wonderful community right here in High Point.

1. Open Door Ministries

Open Door Ministries is a wonderful program that provides a variety of services to those in our community who need it most. The organization serves hot meals; provides emergency assistance; assists with emergency, temporary, or permanent housing; and provides education and job readiness programs. You can help Open Door Ministries in a variety of ways by donating or volunteering for one or more of their vitally important programs. Visit their website for more information at opendoorministrieshp.org.

2. YMCA and YWCA

Both the YMCA and YWCA are nonprofits that benefit the community in numerous ways. Both entities have amazing programs that support individuals and families all over High Point. You can volunteer or make a financial donation to either organization, helping to ensure their programs reach as many people as possible. Visit their websites to see how you can help. www.hpymca.org/supportthey/volunteer/ and http://ywcahp.com/Volunteer.htm

3. Church Programs

Most religions revolve around the principles of serving others. High Point is home to a wide variety of churches, synagogues and mosques, most of which have opportunities to give back in the community through good works or donations. Look to your personal church or find one near you for more information on how they give back.

4. Feeding Lisa’s Kids

This amazing group devotes their time and resources to feeding the children of High Point who would otherwise have little to no food on a daily basis. Feeding Lisa’s Kids is a nonprofit and is run completely from donations of time and/or money. To learn more about the vision behind Feeding Lisa’s Kids check out the article we wrote about Lisa Hawley, the founder of Feeding Lisa’s Kids. And check their Facebook page for volunteer opportunities.

In closing, we would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to give back in some way this #givingtuesday.  Giving isn’t about making a donation, it’s about making a difference.
